Dordrecht, a city surrounded by water, has a unique green-blue structure closely connected to the recreational wetlands of the Biesbosch. It will be an interesting challenge to continue this blue-green identity in the neighbourhoods of Dordrecht.

During extreme rain events, overland flow collects in Sweelinckstraat and at the lower lying South-East in Old-Krispijn. In New-Krispijn, the overland flow collects at the lower-lying North area where it will likely damage the property.

Type             Urban design competition

Area             106000m2 (old) + 154000m2 (new)

Location       Oud & Niew Krispijn, Dordrecht, The Netherlands

Team              Rik Verboeket, Prinka Anandawardhani,                                     Saket Keshav, Shiyang Chen, Marijne                                     Kreulen, Vera Kingma, Isabe Recubenis,                                     Man-Chuan Lin

As the streets of Old-Krispijn will be opened up for sewer maintenance, this offers us an opportunity to rethink the streets as part of the green-blue network. However, the limited amount of public space complicates the design proces.

We designed a green ring which connects the station, the Weizichtpark and the neighbourhoods in Dordrecht. Here, inhabitants and tourists can enjoy the park like promenade, relax, play amongst the trees and wadi’s, go for a run or bike to work.

The bigger vision: Health Ring

The ring is a mobility structure. It inspires to walk, run, bike, rollerskate etc. The 4km infrastructure does not only form a connective infrastructure, but is a recreational attraction in itself as well.

The ring promotes a healthy lifestyle and is accessible for all neighbourhoods. All inhabitants of Dordrecht can use the ring. They will intermingle and meet each other here. The health ring is a unifying structure for the Dordrecht community.

New Krispijn

The structure of Old-Krispijn is similar to a fishbone. It has a large central street to which smaller side streets are connected. The design proposes to transform the central street into a car-free green-blue ring. A recreational gathering area that links the neighbourhood to the health ring.

- Social cohesion added with sustainable means

- Living quality increased with more connected green-blue structures

- Natural water infiltration

- Less urban heat due to more permeable areas

- Less cars in the street

Picture 6-0-1.jpg

Proposed cross-section

Sweelinckstraat - Before

A large part of the street is private property. The public space is defined by paved parking and a car road. There is little space for pedestrians or playing kids. No place for recreation and meet-ups.

Sweelinckstraat - After

The public property is green and open. The front gardens and the public space form a comfortable and attractive union. Bioswales and trees form a nice climate in the street and protect the public space form overheating. Rainwater from the roofs is drained to the center of the street.
