SHIYANG CHEN
PhD researcher at the University of Innsbruck
Dutch Ingenieur (ir.)
Registered Urban & Rural Planning Engineer of MoHURD
Reviewer of Nature Cities
From Beijing
Born in Tongling
Studied in Nanjing, Stockholm, Delft
Working as an urban planner in the field of Blue-Green-Grey Infrastructure development as well as ecological planning, Shiyang is consistently seeking and applying integrated, innovative, localized nature-based solutions for urban areas across various spatial scales and geographic conditions to adapt to climate change, enhance climate justice, as well as boost vibrancy.
Shiyang’s research interests lie on optimisation of spatial structure of urban blue-green spaces to climate adaptation (flood & heat stress), renovation of historical blue/grey spaces to bring (back) more socio-ecological benefits, good governance and co-design instruments for justifiable vernacular NbS implementation, etc.
During the daily city walks, Shiyang is intrigued by the physical and mental connection between local inhabitants and water bodies, as well as those behaviour that not been designed for, which provokes thinking on the overlooked needs of space users.
Recently working on consulting and research projects of Sponge City developments as well as ecological urban planning, providing integrative, innovative, localised blue-green solutions to adapt climate change meanwhile improve liveability of cities.
